Information for international students

Who can apply?
You have to be a member of the nation. Apart from a few exceptions for e.g. engineering students, you also have to study full time at Uppsala university the semester you apply for a scholarship. As SLU is another university, students there are not eligible for most of our scholarships. Only one of our scholarships are open for SLU-students.
We regret this, but we are bound by the regulations governing the funds.

Which scholarships are possible for international students to apply for?
Many of the scholarships at the nation were funded by donors who wanted to support students from their particular part of Sweden. Hence, some of the scholarships require that you are born in
Värmland or Dalsland. The scholarships from Uddeholm require Swedish citizenship. We have two scholarships expressly aimed at foreign students: Mohn's and Calais'. You can apply for Calais', but not for Mohn's. You can apply for Calais' when the scholarship secretaries post an advertisement at the homepage and in the nations buildings.

  • Jean-Louis Calais' Scholarship
To a foreign student, enrolled at Uppsala University and member of Värmlands nation. When selecting the recipient, serious consideration should be taken to whether the applicant has engaged him or herself in or showed interest for the nation and its activities. Single payment.
  • In Memory of Paul Mohn
For the benefit and pleasure of one or several foreign students. In case of similar qualifications a non-European student is preferred. Single payment. Without application.

The following scholarships have no requirements on where you were born: Dahlins (for medical students), Dahlströms, Edgrens (only students living at Phyllebo), Hembygdsgåvan, Kjellbergs (male medical students), Lignells (humanistic studies), Lizells (priority given to students from Dalsland), Oktoberstipendiet (male student of languages), Ribbing-Svartengrenska, Stenbecks, Storjohanns, Sundbergs.
There is so far no application form in English, but there is a phrase-by-phrase translation of the regular form available below.

There are two rounds of application every semester. The dates are posted on the homepage, on bulletin boards in nation buildings and at Phyllebo.

You are welcome to contact one of the scholarship secretaries or 1Q for more information or help with translation.

How to apply

Unfortunately, we don't yet have an application form in English, but here follow parts of the regular application form translated and somewhat explained:

Ok, let's look at the application form. On the first lines, after "Sökt/a stipendium..." you should state which scholarships you are applying for. If in doubt, it's better to write too many than forgetting one.
"Personnummer" is your Swedish ID number. If you don't have one, put your birthdate here. "Fakultet" is what faculty (e.g. medicine) you're studying at.

"Namn" - your name. "E-post" - your email. "Födelseort" - your place of birth.
"Församling" - what parish you were born in (this information we actually never use, so it's ok to leave this blank). "Län" and "landskap" - what part (of Sweden) you were born in (not applicable).
"Slutbetyg från gymn" - the date you graduated from high school followed by the name of the school.
"Inskriven vid Uppsala universitet" - the semester and year you enrolled at Uppsala university.
"Inskriven vid " - put the name of the first university you entered (typically your home university if you are an exchange student).

"Jag innehar följande stipendier vid universitetet/nationen" - if you already are on a scholarship, please put the name and amount here.

"Antal högskolepoäng" - the number of university credits you have. Although Värmlands nation will only count credits at Uppsala for our own scholarships, we would still like to know as much about your studies as possible.
"varav VG / AB / 5" - how many of your credits have the highest grade?
"Antal poäng där G är högsta betyg" - number of credits/points where you could only pass and not get any higher grade than that.

"Jag är registrerad vid " - the name of your department. "...ämnar denna termin tentera kurser om sammanlagt" - the number of credits you intend to take this semester. Please note that to be eligible for scholarships, you must be a full-time student; that is, you should intend to take 30 credit points.

Ok, on to page 2.
The first three lines only apply if you are a graduate (Ph.D.) student.
"Övriga studiemeriter" - Any other academic achievements you would like us to know about.
"Studieuppehåll" - if you took time off from your studies to work or travel, you should mention this here.

"Övriga upplysningar, släktskap med donator... " - any other information. Usually not applicable (släktskap means that you are related to the donor).

"Ekonomiska uppgifter" - financial information.
"Civilstånd" - marital status. First box: not married, second box: married, third box: living together as married (this is Sweden after all...)
"Antal barn och deras födelseår" - number of kids and the years of their births.
"Har make/makan eller sambon yrkesarbete" - does your spouse/live-in partner work, if so, as what.
"Sökandes inkomst sist förflutna kalenderår" - how much money did you make last year? (Not terribly important.)
"Beräknad inkomst innevarande kalenderår" - how much money do you expect to make this year (must be filled in)?
"Av förvärvsarbete..." - money from a job (before tax), support from the government etc.
"Inkomst av eget kapital" - interest from money saved in a bank account
"Kontant från föräldrar och andra personer" - money you expect to be given from e.g. parents or relatives
"Redan tilldelade stipendier" - scholarships you have already been awarded this year.
You don't have to fill everything in here. The main thing we need to know is just that you are not making so much money that the scholarship would be of more use to somebody else. If you don't expect to earn/get more than 170 000 SEK, you can apply. Very few full-time students earn this much money...

"Sökandens tillgångar" - your assets
"Kontanter, värdepapper, aktiefonder" - cash, shares, funds etc. Anything that could readily be converted to cash.
"Fastigheter eller bostadsrätt" - if you own a house or apartment, put its value here.
"Ev. övrigt" - anything else.

Page 3 (I hope you are not exhausted by now):
"Sökandens skulder" - your debts
"Statliga studielån" - your debts to (the Swedish or your own) government "Övriga studierelaterade skulder" - other debts related to your studies, e.g. to the nation
"Till annan person" - if you own someone else some money
"Ej studierelaterade lån" - any other debts
"Skuld på fastighet eller bostadsrätt" - mortgages

"Makes/sambos ekonomiska förhållanden" - your spouse or live-in partner's financial situation

"Ev övriga upplysningar angående sökandens familjeförhållanden och ekonomiska förhållanden" - Here you can put any information that you feel is relevant to your application, primarily about family or financial matters.

"Att ovanstående av mig konfidentiellt lämnade uppgifter överensstämmer med verkliga förhållanden och att jag betalat terminsavgiften innevarande termin försäkras på heder och samvete." - "I hereby certify that the information in this application is true, and that I have paid my the membership fee this semester." Below this, put the date and sign the application. This is of course very important.

"Anvisningar"
"Registerutdrag skall alltid bifogas" - you must enclose your transcript from Uppsala university (this you may get at the Students' office at St Olofsgatan 10B or at your department). You may also enclose transcripts from your other studies.
"Kopior skall vara vidimerade" - if you hand in a copy of e.g. a transcript, it should be signed by someone who has seen the original and certifies that the copy is correct.
"Felaktiga uppgifter i ansökan..." - If information in the application is untrue , the applicant may have to repay scholarships and in certain cases will be held legally responsible. Brr.

Now, I hope this was not too difficult to follow and that it won't discourage you from applying. If you have more questions, please contact us again. Good luck.
