 Choir

Singing at Värmland’s nation has its roots in the 1820’s when P A Edgren started Wermland’s Nation’s Song Society. It was comprised of twelve young men (three in each part) who practiced twice a week. One evening in april, the group sang for the nation’s inspector, Erik Gustaf Geijer. Geijer recognized several of the singers but did not know that they could sing well, so well, in fact, that Geijer ran out into the street and hugged them. The next night the inspector composed a march, “Att älska Gud, kung, fädernesland,” which he then dedicated to the singers. During the 20th century, Wermland’s Nation’s Song Society developed into a mixed choir of constantly varying sizes. At the end of the 1980’s, the choir topped its size at over 100 members.

Today the choir is known under the name Värmland’s Choir and includes about 50 singers, evenly distributed between ladies and gentlemen. The repertoire is extremely varied, but often includes spring/summer songs, Christmas songs, drinking songs, and, of course, Värmland’s song.

The choir’s biggest event during the year is a 4 day trip which usually takes place in early May. We head west to Värmland and make ourselves heard in churches, town squares, and on stages. Other than the annual choir tour, we enjoy choir parties and practice weekends, performances at the nation’s balls and gasks, the Nation Choir Festival, and, of course, our weekly Thursday practices. After practice, we stay and enjoy the nation’s pub and hang out even more!

Dance

Dance Do you like to dance? Join Benwermarna!

Värmland’s nation’s dance group Benwermarna is comprised each term of 10-15 girls from a variety of university faculties. What we have in common is an interest in dance.

Benwermarna, which has its roots in the 80’s, originally worked together with the nation’s orchestra Wermeslaget, but since a few years back we have been a separate group. We use the experience of our members to create choreography. The dance styles of our members vary: street, funk, modern, jazz, etc… We perform our dance routines at the nation’s gasks or at other events.

We take in new members mostly during a trial event that is organized at the beginning of each term. We have no requirements for becoming a member, but it is good if you have danced or choreographed before. If you are interested in dancing with us, contact us for more information.

We do our own dances and perform at the nations dinners and parties. Sometimes we also have our own shows.

We practice at Wednesdays 7.30-9.30 pm at Fyrisskolan. The fee each semester is 100 kr.

"Come and try"-practice is Monday the 13th of February, 7 pm. Come and watch us and dance with us in the big hall at Värmlands nation. We perform with some old dances and teach a choreography.

Do you have questions or are interested to join the dance group, call Madeleine Ericsson 0730-496444 or come to the nation the 13:th of February.

Football society

Interested in football? Are you looking for a relaxed place with good food and drinks for a moment of relaxed football-watching? Do you love heated discussions about which team is the best in the league, who will win the Champion’s League, or 4-4-2 versus 4-3-3? Or do you just want to watch football and root for your favorite team? Then the Football society at Värmland’s nation is the perfect place for you. Apart from organizing Champion’s League evenings and other fun football events, the Football society is a group of fans who love everything that has to do with football and who are happy to share the wonderful philosophy of football.

Do you want to watch PES or FIFA on a projector screen, watch local football, go to exhibits and lectures on football, or help organize a football evening, then you should become a member of the Football society.

As a member, you have a chance to take part in nation life as well as be an active part of a member-controlled society. You can, for example, help decided what will be shown and which events will be arranged. Members also get a great discount on food in the football pub!

So come by and feel the vibe from fans and also take part in our football quiz that we run each football pub!

Martial arts association

We are located in the main hall of Värmland’s Nation every Wednesday from 6 pm–8 pm. To train with us requires no previous experience, we welcome everyone regardless of training background. Training with us is completely free, the only requirement is that the practitioner is a member of any nation. Please bring your own protective gear (protective cup & mouthguard).

The Association has three different branches of martial arts training: Self-defense, Traditional and Competitive Sports.

Traditional

The Traditional branch concentrates on the training method of classical oriental styles, such as kata training. This branch also includes training with classical East Asian weapons, such as swords, knives, spears and staves as well as unarmed combat. This branch finds inspiration from Kung Fu, Wushu and Bujinkan (Ninjitsu).

Wax on, wax off!

Competitive Sports

This branch focuses on sparring, grappling and learning striking and ground fighting techniques. The training also includes a strength-&-conditioning program. This type of martial arts training draws inspiration from such fighting styles as MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Boxing, Submission Wrestling, Muay Thai.

So you wanna be a fighter??

Self-defense

Learn how to defend yourself or a third party against one or multiple assailants in everyday environments. This training method includes defense and disarms against commonly occurring weapons as well as learning how to use improvised everyday objects against an armed or unarmed attacker. To make training more realistic we try to incorporate real life factors such as stress, fighting in casual clothing, and against hold-ups. We draw inspiration from multiple fighting methods including Krav Maga and Escrima. There are no rules in self-defense and no illegal techniques although in training we’re careful not to hurt each other.

Train like you fight, don´t fight like you train!
